Weight, Center of Gravity and Mass Moment of Inertia
This type of analysis calculates the center of gravity, mass moment of
inertia, products of inertia, weight and volume of any FEA model. These
values can be
calculated in seconds after each design modification. Because this type of
analysis can determine the weight and volume of any geometric configuration,
engineers can easily use an iterative process to determine the required amount
of material for any proposed design. Then, they can make
design decisions based on additional considerations such as cost or weight
as well as the original design criteria.
Knowing the center of gravity and mass moment of inertia is especially
important when performing an analytical rigid-body dynamic analysis of a mechanism in
motion. Calculation of the inertia matrix and products of inertia enables
users to validate the results of a rigid-body dynamics analysis or Mechanical Event
Simulation.
